Het Londense Linos Piano Trio komt met Engelse muziek van Haydn, Bridge, Elgar, Byrd en Purcell. Dat het repertoire hen na aan het hart ligt is voelbaar in dit concert.
Linos Piano Trio
Het Londense Linos Piano Trio speelt niet alleen het ‘ijzeren pianotrio-repertoire’, maar eigent zich ook noten toe die niet voor hun bezetting geschreven zijn. Zo ‘hertalen’ ze iconische orkestwerken alsof ze oorspronkelijk voor pianotrio zijn geschreven. Daarmee gaan ze met hun bewerkingen een stap verder dan gebruikelijk. Het Linos Piano Trio speelt op prestigieuze podia en festivals over de hele wereld, waaronder het Southbank Centre, de Barbican en Wigmore Halls in Londen, het Melbourne Recital Centre en de MA- en AMUZ-festivals in België. Sinds 2019 organiseert het trio het Linos Festival in Keulen: een jaarlijks kamermuziekfestival waar het trio interdisciplinaire samenwerking onderzoekt, nieuwe werken in opdracht geeft en de veelzijdigheid ervan ten volle viert. In Leiden hebben we. Hun Beethovenweekend nog vers in het geheugen: dat smaakte naar meer!
Haydn, Bridge, Elgar, Byrd en Purcell
Groot-Brittannië heeft als eilandnatie altijd een gecompliceerde relatie gehad met cultureel internationalisme. Soms bloeide het op als Europees cultureel centrum, soms was het meer op zichzelf gericht. Joseph Haydn werd in de jaren 1790 in Londen verwelkomd als gevierd musicus; zijn kennismaking met de Engelse piano’s inspireerde de latere stijl van zijn klaviermuziek, zoals te horen is in het Pianotrio XV:27. Elgars populaire Serenade voor Strijkers werd aanvankelijk door Britse uitgevers afgewezen omdat deze ‘onverkoopbaar’ zou zijn en beleefde zijn première in Antwerpen. De liederen van Byrd en Purcell stammen uit perioden van Britse welvaart, vóór en na de Engelse Burgeroorlog. En Bridges meesterwerk, in opdracht van de Amerikaanse filantrope Elizabeth Coolidge, werd te modernistisch bevonden voor het Britse publiek.

Linos Piano Trio
The London Linos Piano Trio not only performs the “iron piano trio repertoire” but also appropriates notes not written for their instrumentation. In this way, they “reinterpret” iconic orchestral works as if they were originally written for piano trio. Their arrangements take them a step further than usual. The Linos Piano Trio performs at prestigious venues and festivals worldwide, including the Southbank Centre, the Barbican, and Wigmore Halls in London, the Melbourne Recital Centre, and the MA and AMUZ festivals in Belgium. Since 2019, the trio has organized the Linos Festival in Cologne: an annual chamber music festival where the trio explores interdisciplinary collaboration, commissions new works, and fully celebrates its versatility. Haydn, Bridge, Elgar, Byrd, and Purcell
As an island nation, Britain has always had a complicated relationship with cultural internationalism. At times it flourished as a European cultural center, at others it was more inward-looking. Joseph Haydn was welcomed in London in the 1790s as a celebrated musician; his encounter with English pianos inspired the later style of his keyboard music, as can be heard in Piano Trio XV:27. Elgar’s popular Serenade for Strings was initially rejected by British publishers as “unsellable” and premiered in Antwerp. The songs of Byrd and Purcell date from periods of British prosperity, before and after the English Civil War. And Bridges’s masterpiece, commissioned by the American philanthropist Elizabeth Coolidge, was deemed too modernist for British audiences.
