Sjostakovitsj
De Russische componist Dmitri Sjostakovitsj wist oorlog, beklemming, onderdrukking en onvrijheid voelbaar te maken in zijn muziek. Tegelijkertijd zijn Sjostakovitsj ’composities een toonbeeld van
het doorzettingsvermogen van de mens. We horen humor naast dramatiek, vreugde naast rouw en menselijkheid naast chaos en verderf. Zijn muziek is altijd gelaagd: meer dan eens hoorde de communistische partijtop een heroïsche lofzang op de communistische heilstaat, terwijl een groot deel van het geëmotioneerde publiek een aanklacht tegen de onderdrukking van het systeem hoorde.
In 2025 is het 50 jaar geleden Sjostakovitsj overleed. De kern van ons Sjostakovitsj-jaar wordt gevormd door de uitvoering van alle strijkkwartetten door het fenomenale Brodsky Quartet van 21-23 februari 2025. Deze muziek in één weekend achter elkaar horen, is een transformatieve ervaring. Zeker als die worden uitgevoerd door het fenomenale Brodsky Quartet
Brodsky Quartet
Het Brodsky Quartet behoort al vijftig jaar tot de buitencategorie van de strijkkwartetten. Het heeft weinig zin om hun palmares te benoemen: ze speelden overal ter wereld en zijn alom geroemd, zowel om de geheel eigen signatuur spelen waarmee ze het ‘ijzeren repertoire’ uitvoeren. Tegelijkertijd organiseren ze unieke projecten en spelen ze met dezelfde drive popmuziek met Björk, Sting, Paul McCartney en Elvis Costello. In het seizoen ’22/’23 vierde het Brodsky Quartet hun 50e verjaardag in de Stadsgehoorzaal met een geweldig tweeluik. Dat rekken we nu op tot een heel weekend met de Brodsky’s. Zo kunt u de vier strijkers van dichtbij leren kennen.
Strijkkwartetten
Voor veel componisten is het strijkkwartet het ultieme middel om hun meest persoonlijke gedachten vorm te geven. Intiemer dan een strijkkwartet wordt het niet. Dat gold bij uitstek voor Sjostakovitsj. Veel van zijn vijftien kwartetten schreef hij niet voor publicatie of om zelfs maar in het openbaar uit te voeren, maar voor zichzelf, zijn naasten en het nageslacht. Waar de vroege kwartetten in zekere zin nog tamelijk traditioneel zijn, maken de laatste kwartetten in de woorden van Elmer Schönberger ‘de toehoorder bijna tot medeplichtige: alsof niet aan componist en musici maar aan jou de taak is de gaten die almaar nadrukkelijker in de muziek vallen met betekenis te vullen. Maar het enige wat je, luisterend naar het Vijftiende, kunt doen is toezien hoe de maskers vallen, het ene na het andere, en je afvragen of wat uiteindelijk overblijft nu het ware gezicht is.’
In de vijftien strijkkwartetten van Sjostakovitsj is een duidelijke ontwikkeling te bespeuren. Van de vroege kwartetten, nog tamelijk traditionele kwartetten, tot het laatste Strijkkwartet nr. 15 in es opus 144 uit 1974 is een wereld van verschil.
Strijkkwartetten 11, 12, 13 en 14
De strijkkwartetten nrs. 11, 12, 13 en 14 vormen een belangrijk deel van Dmitri Sjostakovitsj’ late oeuvre. Het Elfde strijkkwartet is een uitgestrekt werk dat wordt gekenmerkt door zijn monumentale schaal en diepe emotionele uitdrukking. Het werk heeft een complexe structuur en bevat een rijke variëteit aan thematisch materiaal. Het Twaalfde strijkkwartet is juist compact en kort. Het bestaat uit slechts één doorlopend deel en duurt maar 20 minuten, maar bevat toch een rijke variëteit aan muzikale ideeën. Het Dertiende strijkkwartet is intiem en introspectief en heeft een grote contrapuntische complexiteit. Het Veertiende strijkkwartet bevat momenten van etherische schoonheid en intense expressie en is bij vlagen mysterieus en transcendent.

Shostakovich
Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich managed to make war, oppression, repression and unfreedom palpable in his music. At the same time, Shostakovich’s compositions exemplify a human’s perseverance. We hear humor next to drama, joy next to mourning and humanity next to chaos and perdition. His music is always layered: more than once the top of the communist party heard a heroic hymn to the communist utopia, while a big part of the audience heard an indictment of the system’s oppression.
In 2025, it will be 50 years since Shostakovich died. The heart of our Shostakovich year will formed by the performance of all the string quartets by the phenomenal Brodsky Quartet from Feb. 21-23, 2025. To hear this music in one weekend in sequence is a transformative experience. Especially when performed by the phenomenal Brodsky Quartet.
Brodsky Quartet
For fifty years, the Brodsky Quartet has belonged to the outer category of string quartets. There is little point in naming their palmares: they have played all over the world and are widely acclaimed, both for the completely unique signature playing with which they perform the “iron repertoire’’. At the same time, they organize unique projects and play pop music with the same drive. They played with Björk, Sting, Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello. In the ’22/’23 season, the Brodsky Quartet celebrated their 50th anniversary at the Stadsgehoorzaal with an amazing diptych. We are now stretching that into an entire weekend with the Brodskys. So you can get to know the four string players up close.
String Quartets
For many composers, the string quartet is the ultimate means of shaping their most personal thoughts. It doesn’t get more intimate than a string quartet. This was especially true with Shostakovich. He wrote many of his fifteen quartets not for publication or to perform in public, but for himself, his loved ones and posterity. Whereas the early quartets are still quite traditional, the last quartets, in the words of Elmer Schönberger, “make the listener almost an accomplice: as if it is not up to the composer and musicians but to you, for filling with the gaps with meaning when you fall more and more emphatically in the music. But all you can do, listening to the Fifteenth, is watch the masks fall, one after the other, and wonder whether what finally remains is the true face.’
In Shostakovich’s fifteen string quartets, there is a clear development. From the early quartets, still quite traditional quartets, to the last String Quartet No. 15 in E-flat opus 144 from 1974 is a world of difference.
String Quartets No. 11, 12, 13 and 14
The string quartets No. 11, 12, 13 and 14 form an important part of Dmitri Shostakovich’ late oeuvre. The Eleventh String Quartet is a vast work characterized by its monumental scale and deep emotional expression. The work has a complex structure and contains a rich variety of thematic material. The Twelfth String Quartet, on the other hand, is compact and short. It consists of only one continuous movement and lasts only 20 minutes, yet contains a rich variety of musical ideas. The Thirteenth String Quartet is intimate and introspective and has great contrapuntal complexity. The Fourteenth String Quartet contains moments of ethereal beauty and intense expression and is at times mysterious and transcendent.
