Zangeres, componiste en toneelschrijfster Somi Kakoma, beter bekend als ‘Somi’, betreedt dit seizoen het podium samen met het Metropole Orkest, onder leiding van honorair dirigent Vince Mendoza. Als dochter van immigranten uit Oeganda en Rwanda heeft Somi een uniek muzikaal perspectief wat haar in 2021 een Grammy-nominatie opleverde voor Best Jazz Vocal Album voor haar live album Holy Room: Live At Alte Oper. The art of Somi Kakoma
Singer Somi is universally admired for her smooth voice, which allows her to sound “both serious and seductive,” according to The New York Times. She was born in America, but developed a strong connection to the birthplace of her parents, who are from Rwanda and Uganda. She blends her background in jazz with her love for the music of Africa’s continent.
In addition to her music education, Somi Kakoma’s studies included African studies at university. Renowned South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela became her musical mentor. As Somi, she released several albums, most recently Zenzile, an ode to legendary singer Miriam Makeba. On these, she collaborates with outstanding jazz musicians from New York and superstars such as Angelique Kidjo and Gregory Porter.
