Meesterpianist speelt Brahms, Schumann, Prokofjev en meer

Wie acht keer in de Meesterpianistenserie in het concertgebouw mocht komen spelen, behoeft verder eigenlijk geen introductie. Spelen in die serie is immers zo’n beetje de hoogste blijk van erkenning in het land der pianisten. Severin von Eckardstein maakt met een ingetogen virtuositeit en poëtische spel elk concert weer een diepe indruk.

Brahms, Liszt, Sibelius en Medtner

Von Eckardstein excelleert in het romantische repertoire van Brahms, Liszt en Sibelius. De virtuositeit die bij tijd en wijle door deze componisten gevraagd wordt ligt er bij hem nooit dik bovenop, de poëtische kracht des te meer. De muziek van Nikolai Medtner klonk tot voor kort nauwelijks in de concertzaal. De componist was op een haar na in de vergetelheid geraakt. Momenteel is er een Medtner-revival aan de gang: steeds meer musici en luisteraars ontdekken de kracht van deze romantische Rus, die tegelijkertijd vertrouwd romantisch en compleet nieuw en eigen klinkt.

Jensen – Erotikon

De cyclus Erotikon van Adolf Jensen (1837-1879) is gebaseerd op dichtregels uit het antieke Griekenland. Deze poëziefragmenten staan in Duitse vertaling bij de muziek afgedrukt. Steeds gaat het om de liefde, opwinding, boosheid, wraak, afscheid, verrukking; een breed scala van stemmingen is herkenbaar. De muziek is romantisch en zeer beeldend.

Prokofjev

Met Sergei Prokofjev heeft Von Eckardstein grote affiniteit. Dat bewees hij op overtuigende wijze toen hij met diens tweede pianoconcert het Koningin Elisabethconcours in Brussel won. En zijn laatste cd is gewijd aan de drie ’oorlogssonates’ nrs 6, 7 en 8. In de zevende sonate laat Prokofjev in het eerste deel de verschrikkingen van de oorlog tot klinken komen, geeft hij in het tweede deel ruimte voor emotie en meditatie, en sluit hij energiek af met een stuwende jazzy finale.

Master pianist plays Brahms, Schumann, Prokofiev and more

Anyone who’s allowed to play in the Master Pianist Series eight times in the concertgebouw really needs no introduction. After all, playing in that series is basically the highest token of recognition for pianists. Severin von Eckardstein leaves a fantastic impression with his modest virtuosity and poetic playing in every concert.

Brahms, Liszt, Sibelius and Medtner

Von Eckardstein excels in the romantic repertoire of Brahms, Liszt and Sibelius. The virtuosity required from time to time by these composers is never laid on too thick by him, which gives him even more poetic power. Until recently, Nikolai Medtner’s music was hardly ever played in concert halls. The composer had almost fallen into oblivion. A Medtner revival is currently underway: more and more musicians and listeners are discovering the power of this romantic Russian, who’s sound is familiarly romantic and completely new and unique at the same time.

Jensen – Erotikon

The cycle Erotikon by Adolf Jensen (1837-1879) is based on lines of poetry from ancient Greece. These poetry fragments are printed in translated German next to the music. It is always about love, excitement, anger, revenge, farewell, delight; a wide range of moods is recognizable. The music is romantic and very visual.

Prokofiev

Von Eckardstein has great affinity with Sergei Prokofiev. He convincingly proved this when he won the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels with his second piano concerto. And his last CD is devoted to the three ‘war sonatas’ nos. 6, 7 and 8. In the seventh sonata, Prokofiev allows the horrors of war to sound in the first part, while in the second part he makes room for emotion and meditation, and concludes energetically with a powerful jazzy finale.
