Een theatraal familieconcert!
Het is al laat en koud. Vernon, Lidrick en Angelo ontmoeten elkaar buiten, op een onbekende plek. Ze horen de golven en sluiten hun ogen om beter te luisteren. Djumbala, Djumbala!… dat klinkt als muziek! Zulke mooie muziek willen ze zelf ook wel maken. Ze tikken en trommelen op alles wat ze om zich heen vinden. Op sommige voorwerpen kan je zelf een liedje fluiten! De vrienden worden er vrolijk van en soms ook een beetje verdrietig. Met elkaar en met de golven maken ze de mooiste muziek. Maar het allermooist is het als ze met bamboestokken samen muziek maken, alsof ze één instrument zijn. Zo wakkeren ze het vuurtje van hun vriendschap aan en dat houdt hen voor altijd warm.
Djumbala! is de nieuwe productie van Oorkaan in samenwerking met de Curaçaose componist en percussionist Vernon Chatlein. Thuis in de Afro‑Curaçaose traditie baseert Vernon zijn nieuwe composities op Muzik di Zumbi en Tambu, dat gekenmerkt wordt door instrumenten gemaakt van natuurlijke materialen, vocale ritmes en klanknabootsingen. Angelo Ursini voegt daar naast de dwarsfluit, andere bijzondere fluiten aan toe. Samen met percussionist Lidrick Solognier scheppen ze een warme, expressieve wereld van muziek, die luisteraars uitnodigt actief mee te doen.

Onder regie van Caecilia Thunnissen wordt het stuk tot leven gebracht in een visueel‑fysiek concert waarbij het publiek een integraal onderdeel vormt. De productie slaat een muzikale brug tussen generaties en culturen. De voorstelling nodigt het publiek expliciet uit om echt te luisteren – naar klanken, de ander en de wereld om hen heen. Dit verdiept niet alleen hun verbeelding en muzikale ontwikkeling, maar stimuleert ook empathie en culturele nieuwsgierigheid. In een tijd waarin leefbaarheid en bewustwording cruciaal zijn, biedt Djumbala! een speelse, betekenisvolle manier om verbinding te zoeken met jezelf, met elkaar en met de wereld.

A theatrical family concert!
It’s late and cold. Vernon, Lidrick, and Angelo meet outside, in an unfamiliar place. They hear the waves and close their eyes to listen more closely. Djumbala, Djumbala!… that sounds like music! They’d love to make such beautiful music themselves. They tap and drum on everything they find around them. You can even whistle a song on some objects! The friends are happy, and sometimes a little sad. Together and with the waves, they make the most beautiful music. But the most beautiful part is when they make music together with bamboo sticks, as if they were one instrument. This way, they fan the flames of their friendship, and that keeps them warm forever.
Djumbala! is the new production by Oorkaan in collaboration with Curaçaoan composer and percussionist Vernon Chatlein. At home in the Afro-Curaçaoan tradition, Vernon bases his new compositions on MuzikdiZumbi and Tambu, characterized by instruments made of natural materials, vocal rhythms, and onomatopoeia. Angelo Ursini adds the flute and other unique instruments. Together with percussionist Lidrick Solognier, they create a warm, expressive world of music that invites listeners to actively participate.

Under the direction of Caecilia Thunnissen, the piece is brought to life in a visual-physical concert in which the audience plays an integral role. The production builds a musical bridge between generations and cultures. The performance explicitly invites the audience to truly listen—to sounds, to others, and to the world around them.
