Johann Sebastian Bach schreef in 1727 een 3 uur durend oratorium over het lijdens- en sterfverhaal van Jezus volgens het Evangelie van Matteüs. Om het belang van dit Bijbelse verhaal kracht bij te zetten componeerde Bach dit muziekstuk voor een ongebruikelijk grote bezetting: 2 orkesten, 2 koren en diverse zangsolisten. Sinds jaar en dag is het in Nederland traditie dat dit meesterwerk in de weken voor Pasen in vele kerken en concertzalen wordt uitgevoerd. Het bijwonen van een uitvoering van de Matthäus Passion is voor veel publiek bijna een spirituele ervaring: de tijdloze klanken van Bach zorgen voor een moment van muzikale bezinning. In de Stadsgehoorzaal is hiervoor de eer aan ons ‘huisorkest van de Grote Zaal’: de Nieuwe Philharmonie onder leiding van de Leidse violist-dirigent Johannes Leertouwer.

Een unieke bezetting
Johannes Leertouwer brengt de Matthäus Passion in een unieke versie: hij staat als dirigent én violist midden in het ensemble. “Ik dirigeer waar nodig, niet met een stokje maar met mijn ogen, soms met mijn wenkbrauwen en vooral met mijn viool,” aldus Leertouwer. Daarnaast zijn er 10 zangers die samen zowel de solopartijen als de koorstukken voor hun rekening nemen. Deze intieme manier van muziek maken zorgt ervoor dat de musici het passieverhaal rechtstreeks aan het publiek vertellen, wat garant staat voor een indringende en ontroerende ervaring.
Nieuwe Philharmonie
De Nieuwe Philharmonie is een projectorkest waarin ‘side-by-side’ musiceren centraal staat: ervaren professionals, jonge professionals en studenten spelen op gelijkwaardige manier samen. Het orkest fungeert als een laboratorium, waarin resultaten van historisch onderzoek worden uitgeprobeerd en worden omgezet in klank. Dit zorgt voor een bijzondere muziekbeleving, voor zowel het publiek als de musici.\

In 1727, Johann Sebastian Bach wrote a three-hour oratorio about the Passion and Death of Jesus, as told in the Gospel of Matthew. To emphasize the importance of this biblical story, Bach composed this piece for an unusually large ensemble: two orchestras, two choirs, and several soloists. For years, it has been a tradition in the Netherlands for this masterpiece to be performed in many churches and concert halls in the weeks leading up to Easter. Attending a performance of the St. Matthew Passion is almost a spiritual experience for many audiences: Bach’s timeless sounds provide a moment of musical reflection. In the Stadsgehoorzaal, the honor goes to our “house orchestra of the Main Hall”: the Nieuwe Philharmonie, conducted by Leiden violinist-conductor Johannes Leertouwer.

A unique lineup
Johannes Leertouwer presents the St. Matthew Passion in a unique version: he stands at the heart of the ensemble, both conductor and violinist. “I conduct where necessary, not with a baton, but with my eyes, sometimes with my eyebrows, and especially with my violin,” says Leertouwer. In addition, there are 10 singers who together perform both the solo parts and the choral pieces. This intimate approach to music-making allows the musicians to tell the Passion story directly to the audience, guaranteeing a compelling and moving experience.
