Nederlandse Reisopera komt naar de Leidse Schouwburg met een nieuwe versie van Verdi’s onsterfelijke meesterwerk.
La Traviata
In La Traviata (de dolende) volgen we de innerlijke zoektocht en de strijd tegen maatschappelijke vooroordelen van hoofdpersoon Violetta Valéry. Met prachtige aria’s en duetten als Sempre libera, E Strano!, Addio del passato en nog veel meer mooie muziek van Giuseppe Verdi. We kunnen ons nu nauwelijks meer voorstellen hoe verontwaardigd er werd gereageerd toen Giuseppe Verdi in 1852 het levensverhaal van de prostituee Violetta Valéry als uitgangspunt nam voor een opera. Het thema van de gevallen vrouw die haar liefde moet opgeven en sterft aan tuberculose, werd niet gezien als een respectabel onderwerp. Maar Verdi was vastbesloten, hij had immers een persoonlijke band met het verhaal. De componist leefde ongehuwd samen met een voormalige operazangeres wier levensloop niet bepaald als smetteloos te boek stond. La Traviata kan worden gezien als een antwoord van de componist op de geruchten en roddels, maar Verdi’s artistieke ambities reikten verder. Hij zag het onderwerp als een probleem van zijn tijd en het thema van de vrouw die van de weg is geraakt (want dat betekent tra viata) kreeg in zijn werk een veel omvattende interpretatie. Gevoegd bij de meeslepende muziek ontstond zo een opera met veel bekende melodieën, die niemand onberoerd laat.
Nieuwe versie
De Reisopera brengt Verdi’s verhaal naar het nu. Dat doen ze niet slechts in een ingekorte versie van de bekende opera is, regisseur Dorike van Genderen heeft een nieuw verhaal heeft gecreëerd rond de figuur van Violetta.
Waar Violetta in Verdi’s tijd door schaamte en vooroordelen omgeven was omdat zij een ‘courtisane’ was, valt Violetta in deze productie ten prooi aan hetzelfde gevoel van schaamte en maatschappelijke afwijzing omdat ze zich gevangen voelt in een verkeerd lichaam. Beide Violetta’s zoeken bevrijding, de vrijheid om zichzelf te kunnen zijn en vinden die verlossing uiteindelijk.
Deze nieuwe productie is geïnspireerd op het waargebeurde verhaal van Lili Elbe (geboren als Einar Wegener), een van de eerste mannen die in de jaren ’30 geslachtsveranderende operaties onderging.
Reisopera Concept Challenge
La Traviata is de tweede productie in de serie Reisopera Concept Challenge. De eerste productie in dit meerjarig talentprogramma was Jevgeni Onjegin in het najaar van 2019.

La Traviata
In La Traviata (the wanderer) we follow the inner quest and the struggle against social prejudices of protagonist Violetta Valéry. With beautiful arias and duets such as Semper libera, E Strano!, Addio del passato and much more beautiful music by Giuseppe Verdi. We can hardly imagine how offended people were when Giuseppe Verdi took the life story of the prostitute Violetta Valéry as the basis for an opera in 1852. The theme of the fallen woman who has to give up her love and die of tuberculosis was not seen as a respectable topic. But Verdi was determined, after all, he had a personal connection to the story. The composer lived unmarried with a former opera singer whose life was not to be described as flawless. La Traviata can be seen as the composer’s response to the rumors and gossip, but Verdi’s artistic ambitions went further. He saw the subject as a problem of his time and the theme of the woman who has gone astray (because that’s what tra viata means) was given a complex understanding in his work. In combination with the compelling music, this created an opera with many well-known melodies, that leaves no one untouched.
New version
The Reisopera brings Verdi’s story to the present. Not just by performing a shortened version of this well-known opera, director Dorike van Genderen has also created a new story around the character of Violetta.
While in Verdi’s time Violetta was surrounded by shame and prejudice because she was a ‘courtesan’, in this production Violetta falls prey to the same feeling of shame and social rejection because she feels trapped in a wrong body. Both Violettas seek liberation, the freedom to be themselves and eventually find that liberation.
This new production is inspired by the true story of trans woman Lili Elbe (born as Einar Wegener), one of the first to undergo gender reassignment surgery in the 1930s.
Reisopera Concept Challenge
La Traviata is the second production in the Reisopera Concept Challenge series. The first production in this multi-year talent program was Jevgeni Onjegin in the fall of 2019.
