Vorig jaar speelden de twee twintigers Aidan Mikdad en Gabriel Ariza op een van onze ScheidenvandeMarkt Concerten. We vonden ze toen zó goed, dat we ze prompt in de Aalmarktzaal uitnodigden. De twee megatalenten spelen grandioze vioolsonates van Schubert en Franck, nachtmuziek van Lili Boulanger en duivelse dansen van filmcomponist John Williams.
Gabriel Ariza en Aidan Mikdad
Gabriel Ariza begon zijn vioolcarrière op 6 jarige leeftijd, studeerde aan het conservatorium van Madrid, won in 2015 de 1e prijs in de internationale vioolcompetitie in Madrid en kwam in 2018 naar Amsterdam om een masterprogramma te volgen. Gabriel Ariza staat bekend om zijn heldere toon, stilistische veelzijdigheid en sterke affiniteit met zowel het klassiek-romantische repertoire als hedendaagse muziek.
Aidan Mikdad is wat je noemt een ‘rising star’: in juli 2023 ontving hij ‘The Queen’s recommendation for excellence’ tijdens zijn diploma-uitreiking aan de Royal Academy of Music in Londen, waar hij cum laude zijn masterdiploma behaalde. Ook zijn bachelor bij Naum Grubert aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam behaalde hij met de hoogst mogelijke onderscheiding. Hij gooide hoge ogen op concoursen, maar maakte vooral heel veel indruk tijdens zijn concerten.
Vioolsonates van Schubert en Franck
Met zijn ‘Grand Duo’, zoals zijn Vierde vioolsonate wordt genoemd, schudde Franz Schubert de invloed van Mozart – die in de eerste drie vioolsonates nog goed hoorbaar is – meer van zich af. Hij betreedt het domein van de romantiek: een grotere schaal, sterkere individuele expressie en onverwachte wendingen. Maar bovenal betovert Schubert met hemelse melodieën. César Franck verenigt Franse dansante lichtheid met strengere, stevige Duitse romantische traditie. Het resultaat is een expressieve sonate vol pakkende melodieën, die je volledig meesleept.

Last year, the two twenty-somethings Aidan Mikdad and Gabriel Ariza performed at one of our ScheidenvandeMarkt Concerts. We thought they were so good that we promptly invited them to the Aalmarkt Hall. These two mega-talents play magnificent violin sonatas by Schubert and Franck, night music by Lili Boulanger, and devilish dances by film composer John Williams.

Gabriel Ariza began his violin career at the age of six, studied at the Madrid Conservatory, won first prize in the international violin competition in Madrid in 2015, and came to Amsterdam in 2018 to pursue a master’s degree. Gabriel Ariza is known for his clear tone, stylistic versatility, and strong affinity for both the Classical-Romantic repertoire and contemporary music. Aidan Mikdad is what you might call a rising star: in July 2023, he received “The Queen’s recommendation for excellence” at his graduation ceremony at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he earned his master’s degree with honors. He also completed his bachelor’s degree with Naum Grubert at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with the highest possible distinction. He excelled in competitions, but made a particularly impressive impression during his concerts.
Schubert and Franck Violin Sonatas
With his “Grand Duo,” known as his Fourth Violin Sonata, Franz Schubert shook off the influence of Mozart— which is still clearly audible in the first three violin sonatas. He enters the realm of Romanticism: a larger scale, stronger individual expression, and unexpected twists. But above all, Schubert enchants with heavenly melodies. César Franck unites French dancy lightness with a stricter, more robust German Romantic tradition. The result is an expressive sonata full of captivating melodies that completely captivates.
