The Same Air: Strijkkwartetten en Schotse volksmuziek van Haydn en Van Bree
Toen de leden van het Butter Quartet de Schotse componist Dan Abrahams ontmoetten, bleek dat ze een passie voor muziek maken en verhalen vertellen delen, én alle vijf in de ban zijn van Schotse volksmuziek. In dit programma combineren ze de Nederlandse en Schotse klankwereld in een programma vol verhalen.
Butter Quartet
Het Butter Quartet is een Nederlands ‘historische strijkkwartet’ wijdt zich aan het onderzoeken van de uitvoeringspraktijken en de context van het late 18e en negentiende eeuwse repertoire. De leden, afkomstig uit Canada, de VS en Nederland, leerden elkaar kennen tijdens hun master Oude Muziek aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag. Sindsdien spelen ze wereldwijd in belangrijke concertzalen, en op festivals als Wonderfeel, de Strijkkwartet Biennale Amsterdam, het York Early Music Festival en het Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht.
The Same Air: Strijkkwartetten en Schotse volksmuziek van Haydn en Van Bree
In de 18e en 19e eeuw, de hoogtijdagen van het strijkkwartet, circuleerden er in heel Europa bundels met Schotse melodieën. Haydn liet zich inspireren tot het maken van arrangementen van Schotse melodieën zoals If e’er ye do well it’s a wonder.
Het Butter Quartet onderzoekt de uitvoeringspraktijken en de context van dit repertoire. De uitwisseling tussen de Nederlandse en Schotse klankwerelden is een rode draad die tot op de dag van vandaag voortleeft, bijvoorbeeld in hun eigen arrangement van de moderne Schotse volksmelodie Torsa van Lau. Haydns strijkkwartet klinkt naast het kwartet van de Nederlandse componist Johannes van Bree.
Dan Abrahams’ nieuwe compositie voor historisch strijkkwartet The Same Air nodigt uit om na te denken over de verbindende draden met het verleden, via melodieën die van generatie op generatie worden doorgegeven.

The Same Air: String Quartets and Scottish Folk Music by Haydn and Van Bree
When the members of the Butter Quartet met Scottish composer Dan Abrahams, they discovered they shared a passion for music-making and storytelling, and all five were captivated by Scottish folk music. In this program, they combine Dutch and Scottish soundscapes in a story-filled program.
Butter Quartet
The Butter Quartet is a Dutch historical string quartet dedicated to exploring the performance practices and contexts of late 18th- and 19th-century repertoire. The members, hailing from Canada, the US, and the Netherlands, met during their Master’s in Early Music at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague. Since then, they have performed in major concert halls worldwide and at festivals such as Wonderfeel, the String Quartet Biennale Amsterdam, the York Early Music Festival, and the Utrecht Early Music Festival.
The Same Air: String Quartets and Scottish Folk Music by Haydn and Van Bree
In the 18th and 19th centuries, the heyday of the string quartet, collections of Scottish melodies circulated throughout Europe. Haydn was inspired to create arrangements of Scottish melodies such as “If e’er ye do well it’s a wonder.”
The Butter Quartet explores the performance practices and context of this repertoire. The exchange between the Dutch and Scottish soundscapes is a common thread that lives on today, for example, in their own arrangement of the modern Scottish folk melody “Torsa” by Lau. Haydn’s string quartet is performed alongside the quartet by the Dutch composer Johannes van Bree.
Dan Abrahams’ new composition for historical string quartet, “The Same Air,” invites us to reflect on the connecting threads with the past, through melodies passed down through generations.
