Or Sebastian zingt over seks, of juist niet? Over dat je niet gereduceerd wilt worden tot je seksleven, maar zelf ook niet goed weet wat een homo-identiteit dan wel is. Dat benarde hokje, dat juist in porno zo scherp afgebakend is: wil je erin of juist eruit?
Gay Porn Suite verwijst naar de klassieke suitevorm met zijn opeenvolging van dansen. Het hart van de suite wordt gevormd door Three Bromo Dances, waarin tekstflarden uit pornofilms worden gebruikt naast citaten uit queer zelfhulp-boeken. Deze slaan elkaar als manifesten om de oren en overstemmen vaak de pornofragmenten.
Muzikaal schatplichtig aan componisten als David Lang en Caroline Shaw, maar ook aan ABBA, is dit concert een hommage aan Or Sebastians queer voorouders. Deze stemmen spreken via hun zang. Daarmee gaat de muziek over veel meer dan porno: het gaat over verlangen, over angst en onthecht zijn, over gemeenschap en vooral over de zoektocht naar een identiteit die niet door anderen is bedacht.

Or Sebastian is een queer vocaal kwartet van multidisciplinaire performers die, met hun verschillende muzikale achtergronden een uniek geluid bereiken, waarbij ze elkaar steeds uit comfortzones trekken. Or Sebastian is Felix Schellekens, Timo Tembuyser, Arnout Lems en Dominic Kraemer.

Or Sebastian sings about sex, or perhaps not? About not wanting to be reduced to your sex life, while also not quite knowing what a gay identity really is. That confining box, so sharply defined in pornography: do you want to be inside it, or escape it?
Gay Porn Suite refers to the classical suite form with its sequence of dances. At the heart of the suite are the Three Bromo Dances, where fragments of dialogue from porn films appear alongside quotations from queer self help books. These confront each other like competing manifestos, often drowning out the porn fragments.
Musically indebted to composers such as David Lang and Caroline Shaw, but also to ABBA, this concert is a tribute to Or Sebastian’s queer ancestors. Their voices speak through the singing. In that way the music becomes about much more than porn. It is about desire, about fear and disconnection, about community, and above all about the search for an identity that has not been defined by others.
