Solo en samen. De bekende Nederlandse cellist Pieter Wispelwey speelt de bijzondere solosonate van de Hongaar Kodály. Maar ook prachtige muziek van Beethoven en Chopin, samen met zijn duo-partner de pianist Paolo Giacometti. Je beleeft zo de cello van verschillende kanten – want dat Wispelweys instrument veelzijdig is, daar bestaat geen twijfel over.
Beethoven
Ludwig van Beethoven, zelf een gigant, stak zijn bewondering voor zijn collega’s niet onder stoelen of banken. Zo was hij dolblij toen de verzamelde werken van Händel verschenen. Daarnaast bewonderde Beethoven de cello, iets wat in die dagen nog helemaal niet zo gebruikelijk was. Hij schreef vijf cellosonates maar ook een paar variatiereeksen op thema’s van zowel Händel als Mozart. Zijn Mozartvariaties hoor je vaker, maar de variaties op See the conqu’ring hero comes uit Judas Maccabaeus van Händel zijn minstens zo aanstekelijk.
De FAE-sonate was een cadeautje van drie componisten (Albert Dietrich, Robert Schumann en Johannes Brahms) voor violist Joseph Joachim, wiens motto: ‘frei aber einsam’ was. Brahms schreef het onstuimige Scherzo dat we bij dit concert voor cello horen.
Chopin op cello
Chopin en de cello? Chopin – uitsluitend pianocomponist, toch? Antwoord: nee! Hij schreef ook een Polonaise voor cello en een sonate. Die Polonaise hoor je nu en daarnaast, speciaal gearrangeerd, enkele preludes en walsen die het met de combinatie cello en piano ook uitstekend doen. Tot slot de solosonate van Kodály. Geschreven in 1915 maar pas na het einde van de Eerste Wereldoorlog in première gegaan, laat die horen hoe veel liefde de componist koesterde voor de volksmuziek van zijn land, Hongarije.
Virtuoos tweetal
Met Wispelwey en Giacometti heeft Stadsgehoorzaal Leiden twee bijzondere mannen in huis, die vaker over de vloer komen. Soms zit dat bijzondere in kleine dingen; over Wispelwey schreef de pers: ‘De cellist weet in plastische bewoordingen zijn enthousiasme over te brengen door kleine details uit de partituur te bespreken.’ En roemt vervolgens diens ‘dynamische, heftig bewogen manier van spelen.’ Paolo Giacometti maakte naam met zijn zeven cd’s tellende opname van het pianowerk van Rossini. Een virtuoos tweetal.

Solo and together. The well-known Dutch cellist Pieter Wispelwey can be heard in the extraordinary solo sonata by the Hungarian Kodály. But also in beautiful music by Beethoven and Chopin, together with his duo-partner the pianist Paolo Giacometti. You thus experience the cello from different sides – because we have no doubt that the instrument is versatile.
Beethoven
Ludwig van Beethoven, himself a musical giant, did not hide his admiration for his colleagues. For example, he was overjoyed when the collected works of Handel appeared, and his idol was Mozart, whom he also visited once. In addition, Beethoven admired the cello, something not at all common in those days. He wrote five cello sonatas but also a couple of variation series on themes by both Handel and Mozart. His variations on Mozart you hear more often but the variations on See the conqu’ring hero comes from Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus are at least as catchy.
The FAE-sonate was a present from three composers (Albert Dietrich, Robert Schumann en Johannes Brahms) for the violinist Joseph Joachim. His motto was ‘frei aber insam’. Brahms wrote his turbulent Scherzo for Cello as can be heard in this concert.
Chopin on cello
Chopin and the cello? Chopin – exclusively piano composer, right? But not entirely. He also wrote a Polonaise for cello and a sonata. You will hear that Polonaise now and in addition, specially arranged, some preludes and waltzes that also do very well with the combination of cello and piano. Finally, the solo sonata by Kodály. Written in 1915 but premiered only after the end of World War I, it shows how much the composer loved the folk music of his country, Hungary.
Virtuoso twosome
With Wispelwey and Giacometti, Stadsgehoorzaal Leiden has two special men in its house, who visit more often. Sometimes it’s in small things; the press wrote about Wispelwey: ‘The cellist knows how to convey his enthusiasm in visual terms by discussing small details from the score’. And then praises his ‘dynamic, intensely moving way of playing.’ Paolo Giacometti made a name for himself with his seven CD recording of Rossini’s piano works. A virtuoso twosome.
