De Israelisch-Wit-Russische cellist Kyril Zlotnikov speelt een gevarieerd programma voor cello solo met muziek van Bach, Weinberg, Prokofjev en Cassadó.

Zlotnikov is een beetje een ‘Geheimtipp’: misschien niet de allerbekendste naam voor het grote publiek, maar hij staat veelvuldig in de top-lijstjes van kenners. Daniel Barenboim is zelfs zo enthousiast over het spel van Zlotnikov, dat hij hem de favoriete cello van zijn vrouw Jacqueline du Pré in bruikleen gaf. Als mede-oprichter van het Jerusalem Quartet, een van de beste strijkkwartetten van dit moment, speelt hij in alle grote concertzalen ter wereld, maar ook als solist speelt hij bij de grote orkesten. In Leiden komt hij helemaal alleen en speelt hij muziek voor cello solo.
Bach, Weinberg, Prokofiev en Cassadó
De Cellosuites van Johann Sebastian Bach zijn de Olympus van de cellomuziek en behoren tot de allermooiste en meest indrukwekkende stukken die ooit zijn geschreven. De diepgang, de emotie, de menselijkheid… De muziek van Mieczysław Weinberg en Sergei Prokofjev ligt in zeker zin in elkaars verlengde. Weinbergs sonates voor cello solo – hij schreef er vier – behoren tot zijn beste muziek: spiritueel, diep en vol schoonheid. Prokofjev kon zijn sonate niet meer afmaken voor hij stierf. Wat er overbleef is echter zo prachtig, dat Zlotnikov het graag voor u speelt. Gaspar Cassadó combineert in zijn suite het beste van Bach met zijn eigen kruidige Spaanse flair.

Zlotnikov is a bit of a ‘Geheimtipp’: perhaps not the most well-known to the general public, but he is frequently in the top lists of connoisseurs. Daniel Barenboim is so enthusiastic about Zlotnikov’s playing that he loaned him his wife Jacqueline du Pré’s favorite cello. As co-founder of the Jerusalem Quartet, one of the best string quartets of the moment, he plays in all major concert halls in the world, but as a solist he also plays with major orchestras. In Leiden he’s all alone and plays music for solo cello.
Bach, Weinberg, Prokofiev and Cassado
The Cellosuites by Johann Sebastian Bach are the Olympus of cello music and are among the most beautiful and impressive pieces ever written. The depth, the emotion, the humanity… The music of Mieczysław Weinberg and Sergei Prokofiev are in a sense an extension of each other. Weinberg’s sonatas for solo cello – he wrote four – are among his best music: spiritual, deep and full of beauty. Prokofiev could not finish his sonata before he died. What’s left, however, is so beautiful that Zlotnikov will gladly play it for you. In his suite, Gaspar Cassadó combines the best of Bach with his own spicy Spanish flair.
